Coastal Studies
Coastal Studies immerses students in our coastal environment; this is a program unique to Beachcombers Academy. It is a weekly part of the curriculum from kindergarten to grade 8. The primary focus is coastal science, however the program encompasses environmental stewardship, organic gardening, coastal history and culture, fisheries, farming and coastal recreation.
Students enjoy multiple fieldtrips. Additionally, the nearby beach and estuary provides an exciting outdoor classroom and many hands-on learning experiences.

Beachcombers Coastal Studies program is tailored to each season. Coastal academics are often inter-linked to other subjects, including visual art, music, literature and science, creating an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to learning. As an example, study of salmon often includes hatching salmon eggs in the school. Students have viewed spawning salmon in the wild, and have participated in the released of hatchery salmon fry.
This program has been paired with lovely BC children's literature about the salmon life-cycle. The photograph on the right is of recently hatched salmon fry with yolk sacks.
In the photograph below, a kindergarten student studies intertidal life including sea lettuce, shore crabs, clams, and oyster. Coastal Studies encourages children's connection to nature. For further discussion, please see comments by Dr. David Suzuki.
