Beachcombers Middle School Program

Picture
Beachcombers offers a grade 5 to 8 program, the Dolphin Class, that includes quality academics, coastal science, and an enriched program. We plan to add grade 9 in the future.

Each year, as part of the Dolphin coastal studies program, students take part in multiple fieldtrips. These fieldtrips develop in students a sense of community, promote personal growth and self-confidence, and are an opportunity for enriched experiential learning.

Students may participate in one or two multi-day or overnight trips to locations such as Strathcona Park, Bamfield Marine Field Station, Horne Lake Caves Outdoor Education, or share other similar experiences. Annual trips such as these, are an integral part of the program; while it is optional, all middle school students are strongly encouraged to participate.

In the spring, watersports is part of the Beachcombers Academy program and includes sailing and kayaking instruction. Dolphin students receive an advanced and more intensive watersport curriculum. Every few years, students may participate in an additional water-sport program. This may include the “bubble program” an introduction to diving that is hosted by experienced divers at the Courtenay pool, progressive diving training, canoeing, or boat safety.

Middle-school students have quality core academics as well as the following enriched programming: coastal studies, music, visual art, French, and coastal sports.

Each week students have four onsite contact school days (Tuesday through Friday). On Mondays students are expected to pursue self-directed academic studies. Families can choose to have students do this at home, or may choose the optional Beachcombers Monday Program.

An optional bus service, Seascapes Bus Service, takes just twenty minutes from Courtenay to Beachcombers Academy. It takes the beautiful ocean-side route through Union Bay, and provides stops for students in Cumberland, Royston, Buckley Bay. Please see Seascapes Bus Service for more information.
