Location

Beachcombers Academy as seen from the sea.
Beachcombers Academy is located in the beautiful coastal community of Fanny Bay in the Comox Valley. The Comox Valley is on the unceded Traditional Territory of the K'òmoks First Nation.
Fanny Bay is known for its oyster and clam fishery, protected estuary, active community spirit, and beautiful forest trails. It contains a nice mix of upper income ocean-front homes and affordable family homes. Whether you are on the water or not, it is a beautiful area.
Our school is located directly across from the Fanny Bay Wharf, which is actively used by the fisheries…and our students for water sports. It is just 8 minutes south of Union Bay and 20 minutes south of Courtenay. It is a 15 minute drive from “down-town” Bowser. A school bus service is optional and provides transportation for students coming from throughout the Comox Valley, including Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Royston, and Buckley Bay. This is one of the most scenic, and shortest, school bus routes in the region.
The 160 acre protected Fanny Bay estuary and tidal flats supports a diverse shore bird population, including great blue heron nesting grounds, and bald eagles who feed along the salmon-bearing streams

Harbour seals in Fanny Bay.
Our estuary is in the centre of the Baynes Sound/Lambert Channel/Chrome Island Important Bird Area that is considered one of the most significant areas for wintering and migratory water birds in BC.
Our rich natural environment has inspired our coastal sciences program. In cooperation with Fisheries and Oceans, students assist with salmon restoration.
We have an excellent location for our water sports program. Fanny Bay provides shallow waters for teaching children kayaking. The government wharf is home to rich sea life, including Harbour seals in summer, and sea lions who over-winter here. It offers good access for our sailing and kayaking program.
Take a walk on the dock on a sunny autumn day and you will hear the unmistakable bark of sea lions, smell the salt air, see purple and orange sea stars clinging to pylons, and witness the gentle movement of translucent jellyfish in crystal clear waters. Fanny Bay is an inspiring outdoor classroom.
