Music Program Snapshot: Spring 2015
The music program varies year-to-year, but is fun and encourages engagement in music. Our enthusiastic and high energy music teacher brings a vibrancy to her wonderful programming. This offers a snapshot of our music program which includes singing, ukuleles, drumming and guest musicians. It is offered from preschool to grade 8.
In the spring of 2015 we had a wonderful performance and workshop with multi-talented guest musician Shane Philip. http://www.shanephilip.com/ He plays a variety of instruments, often at the same time, and is a singer.
The long tube-like instrument is a didgeridoo made out of cedar and arbutus. They were developed by the aboriginal people of Australia; this one was made on Vancouver Island. His music may be described as gentle folk. He started his performance at Beachcombers Academy with a beautiful nature song. He was lovely with students and explained about sound checks, how the instruments were made, and the cultural history of the instruments.

The musician asked students to do a complex rhythm, which students did perfectly without pause, due to rhythm and percussion lessons done in Beachcombers music program. Shane was able to play a counter rhythm and perform with them; our students and the musician became a cohesive band.
Music teacher, Monica Hofer (see below) taught drums and percussion this term. Students were focussed, played beautifully, and were thoughtful in their discussion. A big thank you to Monica for offering our students such professional music lessons, programming and workshops.
