Curriculum Influences
Beachcombers Community School curriculum is influenced by Reggio, Montessori, Waldorf, present-day education research, and our beautiful natural environment.
The Reggio approach is not a curriculum, but rather an approach to enable children to pursue learning within an enriched, respectful, and community-supported environment. It recognizes the rights and potential of the child, honours childhood, and advocates for active and creative learning processes.
It was developed by educator, Loris Malaguzzi, and parents in the surrounding communities of Reggio Emilia, Italy, in the late 1940’s. The Municipality of Reggio Emilia is now an international education research and resource centre. Reggio-influenced preschool and elementary school programs exist worldwide.
Beachcombers takes from Reggio a philosophy of continual observation and research of our children’s development and education. We envision a dynamic and responsive educational environment to respond to our children’s changing and creative needs.

The Montessori method provides children with a classroom environment filled with learning stations and materials. Children are able to pursue their learning independently, with the gentle guidance of an instructor/observer. This allows for children’s learning to be driven by their enthusiasm, and for children to learn and excel at their own pace.
Montessori numeracy model
This method was developed by Italian educator Maria Montessori (1870-1952). Maria Montessori’s respectful and thoughtful approach-- and the impressive academic achievement of her students--lead to widespread use of the Montessori method in private and public schools around the world.
Beachcombers uses the Montessori method of self-directed learning for the core of our academic program. We use of many of the exceptional and beautiful Montessori learning materials.

Waldorf is a beautiful and gentle approach to learning that recognizes the child as a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being. It emphasizes creativity, imagination, logic, connection to nature, and rhythms of the day and seasons. It is a holistic and multidisciplinary approach that supports children to have clarity of mind, a caring heart, and an inner self-confidence.

The first Waldorf school was founded by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner in 1919 for children in the Waldorf-Austoria factory in Germany. Modern-day research scientists emphasize the value of play-based learning; Waldorf has long integrated creativity and imaginative play in education. With its emphasis on respect for, and connection to, nature it is not surprising that Waldorf is one of the fastest growing educational movements around the world today.
Beachcombers’ nature-infused curriculum, gentle and supportive approach to learning, integration of imaginative play, and celebration of the seasons, is Waldorf-inspired.
